Windsor Castle Bahn, also known as Windsor & Eton Central railway station, is a significant transportation hub serving the town of Windsor, Berkshire, England. This station has a rich history and plays a crucial role in connecting visitors to the iconic Windsor Castle, one of the Queen’s official residences.
History of Windsor Castle Bahn
The Windsor Station opened on October 8, 1849, after the completion of the branch line from Slough. The station was initially named Windsor but was later renamed Windsor & Eton on June 1, 1904, and then Windsor & Eton Central on September 26, 1949.
The construction of the railway faced opposition from Eton College, which feared the proximity of the railway would lead the Eton boys astray. In 1871-72, an extension of the branch line was planned to connect to the south via Dedworth and Ascot, but the plans were never completed and were abandoned by 1914.
