The Storied History of the Edinburgh Castle Army Barracks
Oliver Cromwell’s Capture and Military Hospital (1650-1886)
In 1650, Oliver Cromwell’s army captured the Edinburgh Castle and converted the Great Hall into a barracks. The barracks later served as a military hospital until the troops finally left in 1886.
The New Barracks (1796-1799)
